Mayor Kasim Reed Signs Legislation Reforming City of Atlanta's Building Permitting Process

Mayor Kasim Reed signed into law today the new and much-anticipated permitting legislation which will allow registered online applicants the ability to obtain a permit in 10 business days. The new ordinance will also establish an Enterprise Fund which will allow the fees charged for services to remain in the Department of Planning and Community Development’s Office of Buildings for critical technology upgrades and staff training.

Atlanta's Newest Opportunity Zones Provide Attractive Incentives for Downtown and Midtown Office Towers

Last week, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) approved Atlanta’s Opportunity Zone application for the Downtown and Midtown Atlanta sub-areas. As the economic development arm of the city, the Atlanta Development Authority worked extensively last Fall with the Atlanta Department of Planning and Community Development on submitting the application for this new job creation tool.

The Atlanta Development Authority Announces New Senior Management Appointments

The Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) announces several new appointments to the senior team including its new Chief Financial Officer, Doug Ray. A CPA with over thirty years of experience in finance and accounting, he has handled a myriad of real estate transaction from homebuilding development and construction, retail shopping centers, office parks, industrial and property management.  His experience includes careers at John Wieland Homes, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Carter & Associates and most recently the Elias Brothers Group in Naples, Florida.  Ray replaces Thomas Rowe who has served as interim CFO for the past 16 months. Rowe will remain at ADA as Deputy CFO.

Health Information Technology Cluster Receives $1.65 Million Grant to Boost Job Creation in Georgia

(ATLANTA)  Sept. 26, 2011 -- The Georgia Institute of Technology and Gwinnett Technical College, part of the Atlanta Health Information Technology (HIT) cluster, have been awarded a $1.65 million grant to enhance the state’s capabilities in this sector. The initiative is part of the federal government’s Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge, a tri-agency competition initiated to support the advancement of 20 high-growth, regional industry clusters. The Atlanta HIT cluster’s proposal was one of 20 selected from 125 applicants.

ATLANTA On September 1, 2011, The Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) began offering 30-year, fixed rate mortgages at 3.5 percent interest.  Unfortunately, Bank of America (BOA), ADA’s Master Servicer of its first mortgages, announced yesterday its intent to sell or wind down its correspondent lending business.

Master Plan Approved for Military Base Redevelopment in Atlanta

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last week approved the master plan for the reuse of Fort McPherson, a military base located in the city of Atlanta scheduled to close this month. Upon closing, the 488-acre site will transfer from federal to city jurisdiction. In addition, the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority, Inc. (MILRA) will begin seeking opportunities for private or joint development on the site upon reaching an agreement with the U.S. Army, estimated to occur this summer.

Vitality Index For Cities Ranks Atlanta In The Top Ten

Atlanta ranks no. 6 among 35 US cities for vitality and creativity according to Creative Cities International, LLC (CCI) as announced in its Vitality Index™ (VI) last week. The top 5 cities are Chicago, New York, Seattle, San Francisco and Boston. Atlanta placed ahead of Minneapolis, Columbus, Los Angeles and New Orleans.

Landmark Atlanta Skyscraper Finds New Owner

ATLANTA – One of Atlanta’s most iconic buildings, the Equitable building, found a new owner last week.  Located in Downtown at the corner of Peachtree and Luckie Street, 100 Peachtree has held a  prominent spot on the Atlanta skyline since 1968.  It was purchased for $19 million by America’s Capital  Partners, a Miami based firm and seasoned owner of Atlanta office properties.

The Atlanta Development Authority (Authority) is headed to Washington D.C. to attend the 3-day Bio show that begins on June 27th. Bio, an annual event, is the largest conference focused on biotechnology in the world. The Atlanta Development Authority Announces Senior Management Appointments

ATLANTA – The Board of Directors of The Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) named Brian P. McGowan as its new President and Chief Executive Officer last week. McGowan has served as U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and COO for the U.S. Economic Development Administration since September 2009. McGowan was also detailed to the White House as a Senior Economic Advisor from July to November 2010 to establish and lead an Economic Solutions Group within the National Incident Command to help communities along the gulf mitigate the economic impacts of the BP oil spill.

Atlanta's Tourism and Convention Industry Receives Boost Through New Hotel Project Funded Through the Atlanta Development Authority

ATLANTA – Today, the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA), the City of Atlanta’s economic development agency, began the process to provide valuable financial support for the construction of a new Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites by Hilton in Atlanta. The ADA’s Board of Directors approved an inducement resolution authorizing the use of up to $44 million in Lease-Purchase bonds for the project.  Construction is planned to begin this summer with completion slated for 2013. The city’s hotel room inventory will increase by 226. The combined hotels will also add convention and meeting space as well as 192 new parking spaces.

PodPonics Expands to Underutilized Urban Site

ATLANTA (May 10, 2010) – PodPonics, an innovative, Atlanta-based produce company, announced today that it has signed a lease with the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA), as agent for the Atlanta Economic Renaissance Corporation, to relocate and expand to Southside Industrial Park. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Atlanta City Councilmember Joyce M. Sheperd have strongly encouraged PodPonics’ arrival in the area, which is situated under the flight path of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. The expansion furthers PodPonics’ mission to build environmentally conscious growing environments that serve metropolitan hubs and also supports the city’s goal to create jobs and revitalize the inactive urban site.

This week, the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) meets its commitment to Novelis Inc. by providing a $150,000 relocation grant from its Economic Opportunity Fund (EOF). The EOF is a deal-closing fund, created in 2006, that ADA manages on behalf of the City of Atlanta to entice significant business investment and job creation projects.

$265 Million in New Capital Investment Moves Forward in Atlanta with $35 Million in Local and Federal Incentives

More than $265 million in redevelopment and infrastructure projects are moving forward within the city limits of Atlanta as a result of $35 million in local and federal incentives facilitated by the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) and the Atlanta Urban Redevelopment Agency (URA). The Atlanta URA was created in July 2010 by the City of Atlanta to accept a sub-allocation of Recovery Zone Economic Development Bonds as authorized by the U.S. Treasury under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Friday that the City of Atlanta is one of 23 communities around the U.S. selected for award under the Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Pilot Program. The Atlanta Development Authority, together with the City of Atlanta and with assistance from the Georgia Institute of Technology, submitted a proposal to EPA in the spring of 2010.

October is Fall into Homeownership Month

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) is partnering with the Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA) and HomeFree-USA during the month of October for “Fall into Homeownership” Month. Buyers who meet all eligibility requirements and obtain lender loan approval may qualify to receive down payment assistance from ADA and AHA. ADA has $25 million in first-mortgage capital in addition to several programs designed to help assist in-town buyers with down payment and closing costs.

NMTCs Bring Glamour Back to Former Atlanta Macy's

Thirty-two streets named Peachtree run through the Atlanta, Ga. metro area. The oldest of these streets, downtown Atlanta’s main North-South artery, is home to the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, the Woodruff Arts Center, Georgia-Pacifi c Tower and designer shops ranging from Armani to Versace. Now, with a $12 million funding boost from new markets tax credits (NMTCs), one of their oldest neighbors, the former Macy’s building at 200 Peachtree, is a third of the way through a nearly $35 million makeover to become the area’s most sought-after mixed-use events, retail and entertainment destination.

This $35 million project is located on Peachtree Street and occupies the first three floors of the historic building.

ADA Closes $19.7 Million Residential Development Deal in South Atlanta Represents the First Multifamily Tax Exempt Bond Closing for the Authority in Three Years

The housing finance division of The Atlanta Development Authority (ADA), closed bonds to finance the Amal Heights Townhomes project on May 20th.  This deal represents the first tax exempt bond financing that ADA has funded since 2007 when the credit markets began to weaken.
