Atlanta Crime Statistics Continue Downward Trend
Crime has steadily declined in the City of Atlanta in the last two years. This is the latest Uniform Crime Report (UCR) statistics information released by the Atlanta Police Department. Listed below are some of the remarkable highlights for March 2009 (comparing to March 2008):
- Murder down 58 percent
- Rape up 27 percent
- Robbery down 36 percent
- Burglary (residential) down 8 percent
- Larceny down 16 percent
- Auto theft down 8 percent
- The total number of Part 1 Crimes is down 17 percent

“Our team of outstanding officers is committed to protecting all of Atlanta,” said Chief Pennington. “Our commitment to be a best in class safe city is becoming a reality.” Chief Pennington noted that the success elements contributing to the declining numbers are the leadership of Mayor Shirley Franklin, dedicated officers, a comprehensive plan and COBRA (Command Operation Briefing to Revitalize Atlanta). The advances implemented by Chief Pennington are examples of his commitment that he made when first taking office.
