Atlanta has a comprehensive bioscience community, with strong pharmaceutical, technology and research programs based in the City. Atlanta’s bioscience community was ranked sixth among U.S. cities by Ernst & Young in 2006, and has continued to grow since that time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The American Cancer Society and the Arthritis Foundation all have national offices based in Atlanta, which has helped create jobs within the industry. Research facilities at Emory University, Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse School of Medicine, Clark Atlanta University, Mercer University and The University of Georgia foster a thriving community for bioscience leaders.
In 2011, researches received $511.5 million at Emory University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center. Emory is ranked fourth in the nation for discovering new drugs and vaccines among public-sector research institutions.
The Global Center for Medical Innovation is launching the Southeast’s first medical device innovation center. Based in midtown Atlanta, the center is an independent, non-profit organization, designed to help enhance product development and shorten time to market, while decreasing costs. Georgia Bio, another non-profit, is a membership-based organization that helps to promote the growth of Georgia’s life sciences industry, which has created key partnerships with Atlanta-based businesses.
