Historic Atlanta Constitution Building Envisioned for Redevelopment as an Adaptive Reuse Project
ATLANTA – Invest Atlanta today announced it has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) from qualified applicants to buy and renovate 143 Alabama Street, a 95,000-square foot building that formerly housed the Atlanta Constitution newspaper printing facility. Through the RFP, Invest Atlanta seeks to reposition the property for business activity to generate jobs and additional private investment in the South Downtown area.
Invest Atlanta is interested in proposals that meet one of two redevelopment scenarios:
- Renovate and reuse the building, leasing approximately 35,000 square feet back to the City of Atlanta Office of Buildings, and approximately 2,000 square feet of street-level space to the City of Atlanta Office of Planning.
- Renovate the building for a different highest and best use.
“This is a very strategically located building that could house a signature adaptive reuse project and be a major catalyst for further development in the South Downtown neighborhood,” said Dr. Eloisa Klementich, President and CEO of Invest Atlanta. “It’s an ideal opportunity to create a thriving commercial anchor for the community and preserve a unique architectural treasure.”
143 Alabama Street sits at the historic Terminus Junction, former location of the Union and Terminal railroad stations near Philips Arena and Underground Atlanta. Completed in 1947 by local architecture firm Robert & Company, the building’s sleek, streamlined Art Moderne style directly references Atlanta’s rail origins.
Newspaper production ceased at this location in 1953 due to additional space requirements for the newly consolidated Atlanta Journal-Constitution. After housing Georgia Power offices through the early 1970’s, the building has been mostly unoccupied. The City of Atlanta acquired the property in 1995.
