Norfolk Southern Announces Headquarters Relocation to Atlanta

Governor Nathan Deal and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced that Norfolk Southern Corporation will relocate its headquarters from Virginia to Atlanta. Norfolk Southern is a premier transporter of coal, automotive, and industrial products and operates the most extensive intermodal network in the eastern United States.

“As a major hub for both transportation and innovation, Georgia is a fitting home for Norfolk Southern’s new headquarters,” said Deal. Norfolk Southern is purchasing property at 650 West Peachtree St. NW in Midtown and collaborating with Cousins Properties for development purposes. The company currently has existing operations in Midtown near the Woodruff Arts Center.

The new campus will house the company’s headquarters, dispatch operations, operations and service support center, crew management center, corridor operations offices, national customer service center, administrative functions, marketing department, and police communications center.

“We are proud that another Fortune 500 company will make Atlanta its home,” said Bottoms. “Norfolk Southern’s decision to expand its current Atlanta operations and relocate its headquarters here is a testament to Atlanta’s thriving business community and talented workforce.”

Invest Atlanta collaborated with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Metro Atlanta Chamber, and Georgia Power to assist with the project. With this relocation, Norfolk Southern will create 850 new jobs, retain 2,025 jobs, and invest $575 million.

“As a city founded as the terminus of a railroad line, it means so much for Atlanta to have Norfolk Southern choose to locate their headquarters here,” said Dr. Eloisa Klementich, President & CEO of Invest Atlanta. “The estimated $811 million economic impact the company will bring to our city will create and retain jobs, attract investment, and further strengthen our position as a top-tier transportation and logistics hub.”

Progress on Norfolk Southern’s move to Atlanta has already commenced and will span the next several years as the new headquarters is constructed. More details about the project are expected during the first quarter of 2019.
